about us

Hi, I’m Dr. Alexandra Florence

I am a pediatrician, wife, and mom of two, originally from Iowa, and I grew up in the Austin area. I graduated from Cedar Park High School (Forever Cedar Park High!), the University of Texas at Austin (hook ‘em!), Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and pediatric residency training at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Despite our love for NC (and the 4 seasons), we moved back to Texas to be closer to our families.

My hiking crew consists of my husband, Jeff, and our boys: Cooper (6), Brecken (3), and Rudy (56 - dog years).

When not providing pediatric care, I enjoy spending time with family, going to sporting events, exploring new trails, crafting, listening to live music, and traveling to new places.

The Happy Trails Story

I wanted to do better for my patients, myself, and my family and started daydreaming about a practice where relational, transparent, convenient and quality care was possible.

Looking back on my personal statements for medical school and residency applications, the consistent themes were those of longitudinal relationships, personalized care, educating families, sincere listening, providing support, viewing the family unit as a whole, being available, meeting kids at their developmental stage and watching children grow.

Like so many other pediatricians, I was practicing in the traditional insurance-based, fee-for-service practice for 5+ years and became increasingly frustrated spending more time with my computer than with my patients and their families. I could not provide the high-quality care your child deserves in the constraints of 15 minute visits dictated by insurance company reimbursements, quality metrics paperwork and boxes to check. I wanted to do better for my patients, myself, and my family and started daydreaming about a practice where relational, transparent, convenient and quality care was possible.

Imagine a future where a visit with your pediatrician feels like inviting a trusted friend into your home.

I chose pediatrics as a specialty because I love working with families and explaining the disease process and rationale for the recommended treatment plan–but it takes time to build this trust and understanding.

I do some of my best thinking while hiking and some of my most impactful conversations and life decisions have occurred on trails. While hiking with my husband, the idea for Happy Trails Pediatrics was born. I built Happy Trails around the most positive healthcare experiences I have had myself and how I would want my own children to be cared for.

I look forward to venturing into a happy, healthy journey with you, one trail at a time.
